The story of J.S. Bach’s 200-mile walk to hear Dietrich Buxtehude’s music has long been part of musical legend. However, the body of Buxtehude’s work is far less well known than that of his far more renowned protégé. Under the direction of Andrew Megill, longtime choirmaster of the Westminster Choir, members of Westminster Choir and Spoleto Festival USA Orchestra performed Buxtehude’s masterpiece of sacred music, Membra Jesu Nostri, a cycle of seven cantatas, along with one of Bach’s earliest sacred works, the Easter cantata Christ lag in Todesbanden.
