American Premiere

"Listening to Heather Buck perform the American premiere of Wolfgang Rihm's Proserpina, one could only marvel."
“Do not call it love!” Proserpina, (the Latin name of the goddess Persephone, wife of Hades) rails against her abduction to the underworld in an interpretation of Goethe’s dramatic poem set to music by Wolfgang Rihm. In the American premiere of this new opera, soprano Heather Buck embodied the goddess who laments her weakness as the chorus of the Fates, with their enticingly beautiful music, sing that she is now the queen of the underworld. Hailing Proserpina as the “World Premiere of the Year,” German opera magazine Opernwelt writes, “Rihm immerses the Goddess’monologue in an exquisite and luxurious music.”
